In this guide, a line indented two spaces shows what you type. Items in angle brackets <> indicate something that is to be substituted - don't type in the brackets. -----CONNECTING TO THE MUCK----- Use telnet or a MUCK client to connect to svansmoj.ctrl-c.liu.se, port 23. When the intro screen is displayed, type the following: connect For example, if your character name is `Yangu' and your password is `aeriLtjkh', you would actually type: connect Yangu aeriLtjkh You can also connect to your database number, which is handy if you rename your character sometimes. The syntax is connect # For example: connect #4711 aeriLtjkh A note on passwords: they are case-sensitive, so if your password is `aeriLtjkh', the server will reject if you type in `aeriltjkh'. Various characters are acceptable to use in your password, including numbers, punctuation, and so forth, but don't use 8-bit characters, the MUCK is not yet up to handling them. For your security, don't choose any of your computer passwords. Normally no-one, not even wizards, can find out your password, but it's better to be sure. -----WHAT IS A MUCK?----- Official definition of the TinyMUCK 2.2 Fuzzball server software: # This server is a UNIX based networked chat program, with multiple # rooms, users, and built in expandability via an interpreted internal # language. For those of you who know what one is, yes this is a MUD. # A social based MUD, and not a hack and slash type MUD. You won't find # weapons or orcs in this game, unless you spend the time to MAKE it # have those things. This game is primarily designed for those who just # want to socialize. So you have a character who can walk around in rooms, communicate with others and use programs. The difference to combat-oriented MUDs is that it is less of a game with puzzles to solve but just a virtual reality to roleplay in. There is no combat unless players explicitly agree on it. You can't win anything in the game sense, but you can win lots of friends, experience and information. Every player can extend the existing landscape of the MUCK by building rooms, exits and objects, and agreeing with others on how to combine this with the existing landscape. If you are interested in building, check the building guide by typing: news building-guide -----GETTING HELP----- Basic inbuilt commands are listed by typing help For many commands, you can also type help for further help. To list additional commands and how to get help on them, type globals For many of the globals (commands added to the MUCK), you can get help by typing #help To see what wizards are online (the administrators of the MUCK, who have additional possibilities to manipulate the database and can create and remove characters), type wizzes People without wizard permissions, who also offer their help, are listed under helpstaff If you need help, feel free to ask wizards or helpstaff (if they are not listed as off duty) with the command page = -----BASIC COMMANDS----- This is a summary of the most common commands on the MUCK. Some can be found in all or most MUCKs, others are specific to SPR. To find out who is currently online, you can type one of the following: WHO (basic command which works in every MUCK) wd (can output several things, see `wd #help' - try `wd #spec' for example) 3who (output in 3 columns, useful if many people are online) To list other characters in the same room, type who or, for a longer list with species information: ws You speak by starting a line with the character `"' - if you type "Hi everyfurry! and your name is Yangu, everyone in the same room will see Yangu says, "Hi everyfurry!" Also, you can "pose" to others, by starting a line with the character `:' - if you type :hugs everyone affectionately! and your name is Yangu, everyone in the same room will see Yangu hugs everyone affectionately! whisper = Allows you to send a message to another character in the same room, without others hearing anything. Can be abbreviated with `wh'. To talk to someone who is not in the same room, you can use page = For example: page unci=Hoch die internationale Solidaritaet! sends the text "Hoch die internationale Solidaritaet!" to unci. page #mail = This allows you to leave `mail' for another character. To check your own mail, simply type `page #mail' alone. The page program has many more features, try `page #help'. look Allows you to get the description of a room, character, thing or exit. Typing `look' alone will give you the description of the room that you are in. `Here' always means the room that you are in, and `me' is your character. examine Gives you technical information on a character or object, if you are the owner of that item. If not, it will tell you who owns it. For example, you could type: ex me This would allow you to examine *yourself*, and show you various statistics about your character's setup. Lets you use an exit. Depending on the room, most of the compass directions (north, south, east, west, northeast, etc.) or their abbreviations (n, s, e, w, ne, etc.) can be used, as well as up or down (u or d, respectively) to move around. In some areas, other exit names may apply (such as: enter, out, jump). Exits are often listed in the room description. bus A global transportation system. Typing `bus' anywhere gets you in the `64-bit bus'. From there you can jump to some interesting places listed inside the bus. park Transports you directly to Knuth Park, the center of SPR. This is a useful command when you are lost somewhere. gohome Takes you to your home. Can be abbreviated by `goh'. See more about homes below. home A last resort if you are lost. Typing this will send you to your home, and all items in your possession back to their prospective homes. If you want to keep what you arecarrying, use `gohome' instead. take Allows you to pick up an object. Some can't be picked up. drop Allows you to drop an object and leave it in the room. inventory Shows a list of what you carry. Abbreviation: `inv'. There is no restriction to how much you can carry. hand to Allows you to hand a thing that you carry to another player. smell Yes, you can try *smelling* something (or someone) to see if there's any scent! To smell the room or everyone in it type smell here hug A common furry greeting. There are many more of those - type look hug to see them all. The following commands don't work everywhere: read If you are in a room with a "bulletin board" (such as Knuth Park), typing this command will show a listing of all the postings currently on the bulletin board in the room. To read a particular entry, type: read For example to read the fourth posting you can `read 4'. To see a listing of all the new entries, type `read new'. map In certain areas of SPR, typing `map' will call up an ASCII graphics map with an `X' at your location. weather In some areas, this gives you some data about the current weather where you are. -----GETTING STARTED----- When you are new, the best thing is to go to a quiet room with no other characters disturbing you and to type editplayer This will enter the menu-driven player editor, which is self-explaining. Some hints: Answer "yes" when asked whether your description should be converted to MPI. This will send you into the "list editor" where you can enter several lines and finish by `.end' on a separate line. The most convenient way to do this is editing your description offline with the editor of your choice and pasting it into your client program. You can change the verbs you see and others see when you speak - just enter the verb, e. g. `purrs' (for you) and `purr' (for others). All data is saved immediately, so you don't have to worry about losing data when you leave editplayer with `q'. -----GETTING A HOME----- An important thing to do once you have your character set up is to get a home. The default home for new players is `In the I/O Port', but you are asked to change that soon. See the description of that room for information on where you can currently make your home. To set your home to where you are, type: @link me=here This will only work if the room is owned by you or set `Abode' (you see the letter A next to its number). A list of areas where you can settle down is displayed by typing homes -----SETTING INFORMATION ON YOURSELF----- There are a few programs which are used to give further information about your character, and which you may want to set up. pinfo Gives you information about other characters. For help on how to set your own information, type pinfo #help This is for things like address, e-mail address, WWW links, `character profile', personal interests, and whatever else you want to provide to others - it's up to you. Your registered e-mail address will only be visible to wizards unless you mention it in your pinfo. wi This program allows you to set a few `flags' on yourself to give someone using the `wi' command a quick idea of what your character is. Type wi alone to see this info about those in the room where you are. Type wi to display these flags for any character, no matter where. For help, try wi #help
